Topic: Sensory, for everyone, drives either a relaxed and “ready state” or a crisis/survival state. Behavior communicates which state the brain is in. This presentation will discuss the five main coping strategies - Minimize, Tolerate, Sensory Seek, Avoid/Take a Break, and Routine Schedule - as a blueprint to decode difficult behaviors and enhance consistency and function in an individual’s daily routine and environments. Audience participation will be emphasized in application of a sensory worksheet exploring alternate opportunities that these five coping strategies encourage to enhance consistency, support, connection, and safety for behavioral challenges that individuals may present.

Your Presenter: Claudia Meyer has been an occupational therapist for the past 40+ years. Work experience has been with foster care, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and mental health in group homes, residential settings, workshops, crisis services, consultation, and other community-based opportunities. Claudia received an advanced certificate in sensory integration in 2004 and is Phase I certified in Dr. Bruce Perry’s Neurosequential Model in 2016. This NM Model helps define success of interventions from a “bottom up” approach which is complementary to the longstanding development of sensory in OT. Claudia is a past president of AAIDD-WI. She received a WOTA Award of Excellence for her work in mental health and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
